PIRATES FALL TO GEORGE MASON 54-57 IN A BATTLE AT PATRIOT CENTER

Fairfax, Va. – The Pirates of Hampton University (4-4) looked to make it four-in-a-row as they took on the Patriot’s of George Mason University (7-2) at the Patriot Center on the campus of GMU on Wednesday. The visiting Pirates were also eyeing a third victory over a member of the Colonial Athletic Conference this season after having previously defeated Virginia Commonwealth and Delaware.
George Mason, however, had a different agenda, going on to register a narrow 57-54 win over the Pirates.
The Pirates shot only 40 percent in the first half, making 10-of-25 shots from the field as George Mason led 32-24 at the half.
In the second half, George Mason opened with a 6-2 run before the Pirates went on to score four points to make the score 38-31 with 15:56 left in the period. With the Patriots up by seven points with the score 45-38, Hampton would go on a 10-2 run to tie the game up at 47 all with 7:48 left in the contest. Campbell would make a lay-up to give his team the led for good. Hampton would get back within two points after a jumper by Rashad West with 2:52 left in the game.
For the game, Hampton shot 39 percent from the field, making 20-of-51 shots on the night and 35 percent from beyond the three-point arc, making 6-of-17. The Pirates would score 24 point in the paint, 18 points off 20 GMU turnovers, 15 second chance points and 22 points off the bench.
George Mason shot 48 percent from the floor and 38 percent from the three point arc.
Hampton’s West led both teams in scoring with 22 points. Theo Smalling who snatched 11 rebounds (3 off., 8 def.) and scored four points for the Pirates.
Campbell led George Mason with 16 points and graded six rebounds in the Patriots’ victory. Will Thomas grabbed 11 rebounds and scored eight points for the Patriots.
